Thermal Denoising of Cross-Polarized Sentinel-1 Data in Interferometric and Extra Wide Swath Modes

An updated algorithm for removal of thermal noise in Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) Level-1 Ground Range Detected (GRD) data cross-polarization is presented. The comprised two steps: correction the annotated magnitude (previously proposed park2018) and a novel range dependence. corrected by applying scale offset coefficients tuned on few hundred acquired over surfaces with low backscatter Interferometric Wide Extra swath modes HV VH polarizations. values all polarizations processed Instrument Processing Facility (IPF) version 3.1 -3.3 are provided. dependence minimizing cost function between profiles antenna pattern gain (APG). objective validation metric based comparison averaged at inter-swath boundaries proposed. Validation performed hundreds scenes open ocean, doldrums, deserts sea ice. It shows that new outperforms standard European Space Agency almost cases. Analysis worsens cases when APG does not match observed signal, indicating either problems signal processing IPF or imprecise annotation APG.
